Date: 6 – 25 Sep 2017 | Party of 1 passenger: Mr. Kieron Nelson (Toronto, Canada) | 10-day North Vietnam Photo Tour
This is a follow up to my posting of April 23 2017
Finally recovered from a seventeen hour flight from Toronto to Hanoi via Taipei. Devastating flooding had occurred two weeks before my scheduled departure in the areas of Son La province, Yen Bai province, and Lai Chau province.
I now see where a deadly tropical depression battered the country and has ravaged this area again. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected.
I contacted Indochina Charm Travel (Tour operator in Vietnam) before my departure with my concerns regarding the recent flooding and road closures. Ms.Tran Van Phuong promptly checked with the Hotels in the area to update me on the latest conditions. They felt that there would not be any reason to not travel to the area but Ms. Phuong offered me the option of cancelling until the next season. Knowing the resilience of the people in Vietnam I felt confident in continuing with my travel plans.
Ms. Phuong met me on my second day in Hanoi and again on her day off on my return three weeks later. She also made contact during the trip with her chosen photography guide Mr.Trung Lo Chi. Trung is from the North and fulfilled all of my photography requests. He works well with the minority groups and has no problem eliciting great smiles and making sure they are in the best light with pleasing backgrounds. The rain did continue through most of the days, but when you have a guide with no qualms holding an umbrella over you, while you sit in a chair in the middle of a courtyard to photograph Red Dao ladies, it was not a problem. The village ladies were protected under the eaves of their home, (in the pouring rain) helping a young lady put on her scarlet wedding attire. The smiles and laughter coming from them made some of the best photos from the trip as they could not believe the western photographer sitting in the rain. The accommodations chosen by Ms. Phuong were excellent and ranged from the best available to small boutique hotels and Eco-lodges.Breakfast was included everywhere and my guide chose great family run places for lunch and dinner.
From a photography stand point the scenery is outstanding and the people very photogenic, although shy, they are very friendly.
You have to work at getting the shots you desire as the terrain can be quite challenging. Seeking out your special people photographs takes a lot of patience and would be difficult without an excellent guide.
I found Vietnam and it`s people to be a very special place. Indochina Charm Travel and their excellent representative Ms. Phuong made this trip all worthwhile. Her communication skills are excellent, very efficient, and puts the “charm” in Indochina Charm Travel.
